PRESIDENT OBAMA AND PRESIDENT MEDVEDEV OF RUSSIA

Posted by Info on 08/07/2009

July 6, 2009
PRESS CONFERENCE
BY PRESIDENT OBAMA
The Kremlin,Moscow, Russia

……

I won’t pretend that the United States and Russia agree on every issue.  As President Medvedev indicated, we’ve had some frank discussions, and there are areas where we still disagree.  For instance, we had a frank discussion on Russia — on Georgia, and I reiterated my firm belief that Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected.  Yet even as we work through our disagreements on Georgia’s borders, we do agree that no one has an interest in renewed military conflict.  And going forward, we must speak candidly to resolve these differences peacefully and constructively…………….

The report is based on “Freedom in the World” Freedom House’s Annual Global Survey of political rights and civil liberties.

What does this mean? The worst out of how many countries? Why again Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and why not Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan?

Obama Addresses Civil Society Issues In Russia

Posted by Info on 08/07/2009

July 07, 2009 MOSCOW — U.S. President Barack Obama began his day by having breakfast with Russia’s hard-line prime minister, Vladimir Putin. He ended it by sitting down with some of the Kremlin’s staunchest critics.

“America wants a strong, peaceful and prosperous Russia. This belief is rooted in our respect for the Russian people and a shared history between our nations that goes beyond competition,” Obama said.

At the same time, Obama made clear Washington’s concern over Moscow’s dismal record on democracy and human rights and its strong disapproval of Moscow’s meddling in the affairs of its neighbors.

“In 2009, a great power does not show strength by dominating or demonizing other countries. The days when empires could treat sovereign states as pieces on a chessboard are over,” Obama said, alluding to Russia’s invasion of Georgia last year, which put an icy chill on relations between Moscow and Washington.

“State sovereignty must be a cornerstone of international order. Just as all states should have the right to choose their leaders, states must have the right to borders that are secure, and to their own foreign policies. That is true for Russia, just as it is true for the United States. Any system that cedes those rights will lead to anarchy. That is why we must apply this principle to all nations — and that includes nations like Georgia and Ukraine.”

…………………

None of Russia’s major television networks broadcast Obama’s appearance. The only station that did was the country’s cable news channel Vesti-24, which most Russians don’t watch.

ICPO: successes in investigating resonant terror acts in Ingushetia and Dagestan

Posted by Info on 08/07/2009

Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Investigatory Committee at the Prosecutor’s Office (ICPO) of the Russian Federation, has stated that there are serious achievements in disclosing the attempt on President of Ingushetia Yunus-Bek Evkurov and the murder of the Minister of Interior of Dagestan Adilgerei Magomedtagirov.

“The latest terror acts in Dagestan and Ingushetia were like militants’ snarl, an attempt to intimidate those engaged in the investigation,” the head of the ICPO has emphasized.

He believes that “terrorism in Northern Caucasus is an outgoing topic, provided special operations continue, statehood becomes stronger and inspectors learn to open crimes,” the “Rossiiskaya Gazeta” writes.

Alexander Bastrykin also told about the progress in investigating the crimes of Georgian militaries during last year’s warfare in South Ossetia. According to his story, “the corpus delicti has been completely proved: genocide and massacre of peaceful citizens,” the “Interfax” reports. In total, 5315 persons have been recognized as victims.

Russian authorities thwart peaceful anti-torture demonstration

Posted by Info on 08/07/2009

Russian police detained demonstrators speaking out against torture following an unsuccessful attempt for the IRCT’s Russian member centre Interregional Non-governmental Organization “Committee against Torture” (INGO CAT) to organise a peaceful protests against torture in commemoration of the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on 26 June in Nizhniy Novgorod.

In the place of the picket the Committee staff unfolded banners with the following slogans: “Responsible for tortures must be punished”, “Inaction of the Prosecutor’s Office is the cause of tortures”, “26 June – International Day in Support of Victims of Torture”, “Prohibition of torture; effective investigation; fair trial”. The picketing was attended by victims of police abuse who had graciously agreed to support the Committee’s action.

This year, however, the local authorities denied an approval for a public event to take place and a legal appeal by INGO CAT went unanswered. Police arrested five activists, who were released after paying a fine.
