The following is a letter from the parents of Anastasia Baburova to AI..

We want to thank Amnesty International activists for the attention and concern you have shown towards Stanislav Yurevich Markelov and our dear and beloved daughter Nastenka [Anastasia] Baburova. We hope that the international community’s demands made of the President and government of Russia will have a positive influence on the course of the investigation and on bringing to justice the killer and those who ordered the killing.

Whoever commits an act of terrorism is a terrorist

Posted by Info on 19/07/2009

Martin Scheinin, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights and counter-terrorism speaks about his personal assessment of state terrorism:

“Well, to me the acts are decisive. Whoever commits an act of terrorism is a terrorist; that is attacks against members of the general population with deadly or other serious kind of violence for political purposes, such as compelling a government or an international organization to do something, or to terrorize the general population. I see that states can be involved in acts of terrorism; they can also be in the background recruiting or financing a terrorist group to commit a terrorist attack. I don’t think there should be any difference in the response, whether it is a state actor or a non-state actor, the acts are decisive and whoever commits them is a terrorist.

Chechen leader to sue rights group chief over murder allegations

Posted by Info on 19/07/2009

Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov plans to sue the director of a human rights group that accused him of being behind the murder of activist Natalya Estemirova. Estemirova, who had been investigating kidnappings and disappearances in Chechnya for the Russian human rights group Memorial, was abducted and murdered on Wednesday in the south Russian republic.

He said the claim would be filed in Moscow, where Memorial is registered, and that a statement on the slander allegations would be submitted the Moscow police department. In a statement published on Memorial’s website on Wednesday, Orlov said:

“I know, I am certain who is to blame for the murder of Natasha Estemirova. We all know this person. His name is Ramzan Kadyrov, the president of the Chechen Republic.”

Orlov replied that he had not accused Kadyrov personally of killing Estemirova, but had meant that, as president, he was responsible for crime in the republic, which saw two brutal separatist wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, Chechnya’s Segodnya news agency later reported.

Kadyrov told journalists on Wednesday evening that “a search for the criminals will be carried out not only during an official investigation, but also unofficially, according to Chechen traditions.

“It seems to be open season on anyone trying to highlight the appalling human rights abuses in Chechnya.

It’s high time the Russian government acted to stop these killings and prosecute those responsible,

the head of the New-York based international human rights organization, Kenneth Roth, said.
