Rights Activist Leaves Chechnya For Safety Reasons

A Chechen human rights activist Akhmed Gisaev and his family have left Chechnya because they fear for their lives

Aleksandr Cherkasov of the Moscow-based Memorial human rights center told  that Akhmed Gisaev along with his late colleague, Natalya Estemirova, had been investigating the apparent kidnapping of Chechen Apti Zainalov in the Achkhoi-Martan District of Chechnya this year.

Estemirova was assassinated last month. After Estemirova was murdered, unknown individuals started following Gisaev. The case of Zainalov, in which Gisaev is the only witness, is expected to be the focus of the European Court.

Fire hits human rights office in Russia’s Dagestan

Novosti: A fire broke out overnight in the office of a human rights organization in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan.

Svetlana Isaeva, head of the “Mothers of Dagestan for Human Rights” organization said. “The office didn’t burn down completely, but all our equipment has been ruined.The blaze could have been an arson attack.”

“We haven’t been working in the office for nearly two weeks because the power has been cut off. I visited several times to pick up the mail. The equipment was turned off. It can’t have been a short circuit.”

Терроризм на Северном Кавказе угрожает Олимпиаде

Frankfurter Rundschau: Число жертв в Ингушетии и соседних республиках Северного Кавказа растет. Пока эксперты строят догадки о причинах вспышки насилия, федеральному центру грозит потеря контроля над ситуацией.

Кроме того, Назрань находится на одной широте с Сочи, всего в 400 километрах от будущей олимпийской столицы. Кремлю следовало бы задуматься над тем.
