Posted by Info on 27/10/2009

Eurasia Net: Tbilisi and Washington are discussing the possibility of Georgia accepting suspected terrorists currently being held at the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay. President Mikheil Saakashvili has made it clear that Georgia is ready to take Guantanamo prisoners. In a television interview in late September, Saakashvili said that the country isabsolutely” willing to host Guantanamo detainees. “You know, whatever we can do to help America on its war on terror, we will do,” he said.

“All detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison should be freed or transferred to U.S. federal courts for trial by the Jan. 22 deadline set by President Barack Obama”, Guantanamo now holds about 223 men, and according to a list released in late September at least 75 have been cleared for release.

Georgia is  one of just  few of countries that have offered to take Guantanamo prisoners this year next to  The United Kingdom, Portugal, Belgium, France and Ireland.

Although the resettlement program has existed since 2002, little public information exists about how host countries are chosen.US State Department officials did not respond to requests to explain the Guantanamo Bay prisoner release program.
