Georgia’s Rebel Abkhazia Adopts Russian Phone Code + 7

Posted by Info on 16/11/2009

Russia recognized pro-Western Georgia’s regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which rely heavily on it for economic and military backing, as independent after crushing a Georgian assault on South Ossetia last year. Abkhazia began using Russia’s +7 dialing code on Sunday. The old codes will work until Jan 1.

The move drew a furious reaction from Georgia. The Georgian Foreign Ministry said on Monday it had sent a protest note to Russia via the Swiss embassy and had informed the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Georgia cut diplomatic ties with Russia after the war.

ITU rules state that non-U.N. member states need the approval of two-thirds of ITU members to join the Union. Only Nicaragua and Venezuela have followed Russia in recognizing Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Posted by Info on 16/11/2009

Posted by Info on 16/11/2009

Risk of Mocking Azeri Bureaucrats as Donkeys – “Honor To Be Imprisoned For Ideals” – Young People Are Not Afriad Anymore

Posted by Info on 16/11/2009

The case follows a series of clampdowns on traditional media and the imprisonment of several opposition journalists.

Political satire is seen as particularly risky. Milli and Hajizade were arrested not long after distributing a comical video clip that featured a talking donkey lampooning official corruption. Emin Milli was jailed for 2 1/2 years and Adnan Hajizade for two years in prison sentences for “hooliganism.”

“I’m ready to take any punishment for the ideals I believe in. It is an honor for me to be imprisoned for my ideals.”

Local analysts have suggested that the authorities could also be concerned about the rise of new generation of Internet-savvy, independent-minded youth in Azerbaijan. Television stations largely echo the government’s opinions, but the use of online media has been increasing significantly and is harder to control.

Friends of Milli and Hajizade have told me they believe that the case was an attempt to scare other Azeri Internet activists into silence.

“People are not afraid anymore. They are proud of Milli and Hajizade and want to continue everything. The current spirit among young people fighting for democracy and liberty is that this is not the end but a great beginning.”

Medvedev:“We are interested in them (foreigners), not the other way around.”

Medvedev’s Speech Promotes Change, Lacks Practicality

President Dmitry Medvedev urged migration authorities to show more hospitality toward foreigners in his state-of-the-nation address last week, even as those same authorities start enforcing a diploma rule that affects most foreign professionals.

Medvedev mentioned visas when he spoke about the need to make working in Russia attractive in order to lure foreign researchers and businesspeople who can commercialize new inventions.

“They must be issued visas quickly and for a long period. We are interested in them, not the other way around.”

In speaking about researchers, Medvedev said officials must simplify the rules for recognizing foreign diplomas.

But migration officials, who have demanded that foreigners supply their diplomas proving their qualifications in order to obtain work permits for the past decade, started in September to also require that the diplomas be submitted with an apostille, a stamp from the foreigner’s Foreign Ministry that certifies the diploma’s authenticity to a foreign government.
