Georgian National Hero, US Senator McCain Defends His Anti-Russian Views

Posted by Info on 13/01/2010

US Senator John McCain has visited Georgia to confirm his support for the country’s leadership, but politicians and analysts still see hidden motives behind.
McCain, then Republican candidate for the presidency, backed Tbilisi during the tragic events in the Caucasus in August 2008. On January 11, President Mikhail Saakashvili, in return for the support, awarded McCain the Order of National Hero of Georgia.

Regnum news agency considers McCain’s visit to Georgia “a part of his campaign for a new term in the US senate.” “McCain has decided to change somewhat his image as Mikhail Saakashvili’s supporter to that of the ‘friend of all Georgian people.’

“If You Don’t Want Muslims To Attack You, Stop Killing Them.”

Posted by Info on 13/01/2010

According to journalist and filmmaker Nir Rosen a recent incident involving a terrorist who attempted to blow up a Detroit-bound plane on Christmas Day was a revenge attack. He says US foreign policy is a breeding ground and a “justification” for more terror.

What we’ve done is increase this amount [of Muslim extremists] significantly by killing thousands of innocent Muslims. If you don’t want Muslims to attack you, stop killing them,”
the filmmaker says.

Al-Qaeda is not a threat to the US but only an excuse used by the American leadership to justify its military campaign in Afghanistan and other countries, ha added.

EC Yukos Hearing AGAIN Postponed because of Judge Acting On Behalf Of Russia

Posted by Info on 13/01/2010

Yukos hearing in Strasbourg court postponed until MarchThe previous hearing was scheduled for January 14, 2010.
Yukos turned to the Strasbourg court in 2004 with a complaint against Russian tax authorities’ actions, which it argued were an illegal seizure of property.

It is the third time the hearing has been postponed because Andrei Bushev, a judge acting on behalf of Russia, and Georgy Matyushkin, Russia’s envoy at the European Court of Human Rights, were unable to attend, the court said.

13.11.2009
“The hearing in the case of OAO Neftyanaya Kompaniya Yukos vs. Russia (no. 14902/04) initially scheduled for 19 November 2009 has been postponed to allow the recently appointed ad hoc Judge in this case (Andrei Bushev) more time to familiarize himself with the file,” the court said on its website.

Yukos says the Russian authorities violated several articles of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, including the right to a fair trial, protection of property and freedom from discrimination.

Ex-Yukos Executive Given New 15-Year Jail Term

Posted by Info on 13/01/2010

A Moscow court has sentenced former Yukos deputy manager Alexei Kurtsin to 15 1/2 years in prison for embezzlement. Two other defendants, Yury Ivanov and Konstantin Vinogradov, were sentenced to eight year jail terms.

Yukos founder Mikhail Khodorkovsky is serving eight years in prison for fraud and tax evasion. He has consistently denied all charges against him, saying he was punished for supporting the tiny pro-Western political opposition. He claims the liquidation of Yukos was engineered by corrupt government officials aiming to seize lucrative oil assets.

Kurtsin has two other convictions over his activities at Yukos. In December 2008 he was sentenced to 12 years for embezzling and laundering 74 million rubles, while in December 2005 he received a 14-year sentence for embezzling and laundering 343 million rubles belonging to Yukos.

Freedom House: Свободы В России Стало Еще Меньше

Posted by Info on 13/01/2010
