CIA Secret Prisons – Lithuanian Foreign Minister Vygaudas Usackas Step Down

Posted by Info on 21/01/2010

Foreign Minister Vygaudas Usackas decided to step down after the president expressed no confidence in him.
Such a decision was made by the head of the Lithuanian diplomacy after the sitting of the ruling coalition on Wednesday evening. The coalition partners decided that the minister could not resume his work because of the lost confidence.

The lack of information has led observers to conclude that Ušackas’s resignation is linked to the Lithuanian parliament’s conclusion, adopted last week, that the US secret service operated a secret detention facility on Lithuanian soil during its ‘war on terror’.

The parliamentary probe,
undertaken with president Dalia Grybauskaitė’s backing, also concluded that officials in Lithuania’s intelligence service were aware of the secret prison run by the US Central Intelligence Agency. One of those officials, Mečys Laurinkus, was recalled as Lithuania’s ambassador to Georgia in December. Ušackas resisted Laurinkus’s removal.

Ušackas, who served as Lithuania’s ambassador to the US in 2001-06
, has also denied suggestions that he knew about the CIA facility.

Body Scanners In Russia For Last 3 years

Posted by Info on 21/01/2010

A meeting of the EU’s interior and justice ministers takes place this Thursday in Toledo in Spain in order to discuss the introduction of body scanners. But the scanners, which show passengers naked, have been in use at Moscow’s Domodevodo Airport in Russia for three years.

The procedure in Moscow is simple: a security official asks the passenger to raise his or her arms and step into a plexi-glass cabin. There the passenger hears a short buzzing sound, and a digital 3D image of the passenger’s body appears on a screen in a closed-off cabin, to be scrutinized by another security guard.
But many passengers at Domodedovo’s international terminal are surprised when they realize that they have just been sent through one of the controversial body scanners. They did not know that it was introduced there.

The scanners have sparked controversy because they allow security personnel to see nude images of passengers, and many critics condemn them as an unethical intrusion into privacy.

BUT……body scanners are ineffective. They are unlikely to detect 80 grams of PETN explosives hidden in the underware of a person. And once it is known that body scanners are in use, they are easy to avoid by hiding this type of explosives in a body cavity or in a commercial item in one’s hand luggage.
PETN – hard to detect and just 100g can destroy a car. The explosive is extremely powerful, allowing terrorists to use only small quantities to cause enormous damage.

Posted by Info on 21/01/2010

Posted by Info on 21/01/2010

Petitioners Urge Azerbaijan To Free Fatullayev Who Is Journalist NOT Terrorist

Posted by Info on 21/01/2010

His Excellency Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, 19 Istiqlaliyyat Street, Baku 370066, Azerbaijan
Hand-delivered to Charge d’Affaires Khazar Ibrahim at the Azerbaijani Embassy in Washington
Also via facsimile: +994 12 492 0625 and +994 12 492 3543

Your Excellency,
The Committee to Protect Journalists urges you to open a new page in your government’s policies toward the independent and opposition press, one that would demonstrate tolerance for the critical role of media in a democracy. No other action would contribute to this goal as much as the immediate release of Eynulla Fatullayev, editor of the now-closed independent Russian-language weekly Realny Azerbaijan and the Azeri-language daily Gündalik Azarbaycan, who has been imprisoned since April 2007 on charges that range from defamation to terrorism.

Our research shows that the charges were not based on factual evidence and were pursued, instead, to retaliate against Fatullayev and silence his critical journalism……..

Posted by Info on 21/01/2010

Security At Airports? Will Body Scanners Help? UN Special Rapporteur Says NO!

Posted by Info on 21/01/2010

...body scanners are ineffective. They are unlikely to detect 80 grams of PETN explosives hidden in the underware of a person. And once it is known that body scanners are in use, they are easy to avoid by hiding this type of explosives in a body cavity or in a commercial item in one’s hand luggage.

Further, as body scanners will slow down the security checks at airports, it is likely, although not unavoidable, that their use will result in a new wave of discriminatory profiling based directly or indirectly on nationality, ethnicity or religion.

There are better ways than body scanners and group-related profiling to improve security at airports and elsewhere. The technology already exists for detecting from distance most explosive substances, including PETN…Together with professional observation of behavioral patterns this provides a prospect of respecting privacy while at the same time doing a better job in preventing acts of terrorism.

PETN – hard to detect and just 100g can destroy a carThe explosive is extremely powerful, allowing terrorists to use only small quantities to cause enormous damage. And the colourless crystals of the substance, PETN or pentaerythritol trinitrate, are hard to detect if carried in a sealed container…..
