Sweden Denied Refuge Status For Five Uzbeks – Deportation to Uzbekistan

Posted by Info on 04/06/2010

On 26 May Sweden’s migration authorities deprived five Uzbek refugees of the right to continue to stay in the country because they had failed to provide evidence for receiving political refuge in the Scandinavian country.

“We, activists of the Birdamlik people’s movement living in the USA, think this decision of the Swedish government is extremely cruel and ruthless. You know that all refugees returning to Uzbekistan are violently tortured by [President] Islam Karimov’s dictatorial regime and jailed for long terms.”
“That is why we demand the Swedish government prevent the deportation of five refugees to Uzbekistan. We hope that such socially-developed and democratic country like Sweden will not encourage new violence.”

There are enough grounds for the activists’ concerns: Dilorom Abdukadirova, a refugee from Andijan who returned from Australia, was sentenced to 10 years and two months in prison in late April.
