UN Rights Chief Urges Uzbekistan To Keep Borders Open

Posted by Info on 14/06/2010

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Monday called on Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to keep their borders open for refugees fleeing the violent unrest in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan.

She “urged both Uzbekistan, which is already reported to have received tens of thousands of people fleeing the fighting, and Tajikistan to keep their borders open to anyone, irrespective of age or gender, who is in need of sanctuary.”

Uzbekistan earlier Monday ordered its frontier closed to a mass exodus of mainly ethnic Uzbeks fleeing clashes between rival groups in Kyrgyzstan. The International Committee of the Red Cross estimated that 80,000 people have already fled into Uzbekistan, while another 15,000 were waiting at the Kyrgyz border to cross over earlier Monday.

Uzbekistan Opens Border to 75 000(?) Refugees Fleeing Kyrgyzstan

Posted by Info on 14/06/2010

Uzbekistan has opened the border for refugees as of the night of June 13 and officials say they will keep it open. Before the border opened, thousands of refugees were scrambling in panic, climbing into and out of pits earlier dug along the border by Uzbekistan, but now they are being assisted by Uzbek authorities.

The death toll in the Kyrgyz-Uzbek ethnic conflict in southern Kyrgyzstan, now in its fourth day, has reached 113, with 1,292 wounded (742 hospitalized and 550 treated) in both Osh and Jalal-Abad regions, AKIpress.org reports. In Osh, 1149 have been brought to emergency care (654 hospitalized, 403 treated and 92 died). In Jalal-Abad, 256 have been brought to medical facilities (88 hospitalized, 147 treated, and 21 have died)…..

There are conflicting reports between Kyrygz and Uzbek authorities. The Kyrgyz interrim government, citing local Kyrgyz border officials, say only 6,000 refugees have already crossed the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border. But the Emergencies Ministry of Uzbekistan says that about 75,000 refugees have already crossed from Kyrgyzstan into Uzbekistan.
