Freedom Of Assembly In Russia: Hunt By Police Officer / Hunt For Police Officer

Posted by Info on 04/08/2010

The rally on Saturday was one of several staged in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities to draw attention to Article 31 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of assembly. The authorities have refused to authorize the rallies, organized by opposition and human rights activists on the last day of every month with 31 days since July 2009.

The crackdown rallies ended with the arrest of about 95 people, including opposition leader Boris Nemtsov in Moscow.

The violent actions of a police officer caught on camera during an anti-Kremlin rally in St. Petersburg have prompted bloggers to launch an unprecedented campaign to find and prosecute him.
Video footage posted on YouTube shows the beefy policeman grabbing a young man by the hair and striking him with a baton before hauling him to a police bus with drawn curtains in the windows. The policeman also pulled the hair of a young woman who was filming the rally.. Photo
