Russia: Prosecutors Say 90% of Prisoners Are Ill

Posted by Info on 12/08/2010

Prosecutors had inspected prisons in 80 regions. The result was shoking. More than 90 percent of prisoners in Russian prisons and pretrial detention facilities have health problems. Prison doctors registered more than 1.2 million cases of various illnesses last year, 15,000 inmates suffer from syphilis, 40,000 have active tuberculosis, 67,000 suffer from psychological disorders, and another 55,000 are HIV positive…

The situation is a result of a lack of financing for prison health care. The prison hospitals lack personnel, and almost 60 percent of its medical equipment is obsolete. This results in insufficient health care for inmates, which sometimes resulted in deaths.

Prosecutors revealed mass violations in one of the oldest detention centers, Butyrka, which is located in Moscow. The inspection began soon after the scandal broke out surrounding the death of lawyer Sergey Magnitsky.

Director of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) Aleksandr Reimer has been given one month to correct the situation.
