Uzbek President Islam Karimov, a dictator, is notorious for his brutality. Transparency International has declared Uzbekistan to be one of the seven most corrupt countries in the world. Reporters Without Borders rates Uzbekistan 160th out of 175 countries when it comes to freedom of the press, and the conservative US Heritage Foundation puts Uzbekistan in 158th place in its ranking of countries on the basis of economic freedom.

Human rights organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are sharply critical of Uzbekistan for brutal child labor in the cotton fields, systematic torture and arbitrary court decisions.
