Uzbek President Karimov Ignores OSCE Summit In Astana

Posted by Info on 01/12/2010

Uzbek President Islam Karimov has declined to addend the OSCE summit in Astana on 1 and 2 December. No reason has been given for Karimov’s refusal to go to Astana.

Karimov’s absence in the OSCE summit shows complicated relations between Central Asian countries and the lack of solidarity and mutual support from one another even in the year when ethnic clashes broke out in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan.Karimov seems to have missed a chance to use OSCE mechanisms and support from world leaders to protect Kyrgyzstan’s ethnic Uzbek minority from Kyrgyz nationalists.

Observers in Kazakhstan say that Karimov’s participation was doubtful from the very announcement of the summit. The media speculated that Karimov had tried to achieve certain concessions from Astana in return for his attendance.
