UN SC Puts Russian Militant Umarov On Terrorist List

Posted by Info on 12/03/2011

The United Nations Security Council has included Russian militant leader Doku Umarov on its terrorist list.

Umarov who styles himself as “the Emir of the Caucasus,” is linked to a terrorist attack on Moscow’s Domodedovo airport on January 24 and for the suicide bombings in the Moscow metro in March. The blasts killed 36 and 40 people respectively.

The sanctions include a total freeze on all assets belonging to Umarov, a travel ban and a ban on the rendition of any kind of assistance to the militant, including providing weapons or financial assistance.

Russia requested that Umarov be included in the list in November, but discussion of the issue was postponed at the request of the United States.
