Uzbek President Islam Karimov’s youngest daughter Lola Karimova-Tillayeva is suing French website Rue89 for calling her father a “DICTATOR”.

Ms Karimova-Tillayeva, who is Uzbekistan’s envoy to UNESCO, is demanding €30,000 in moral damages for an article for entitled “AIDS: Uzbekistan represses at home, but parades in Cannes”. The article was written by Augustin Scalbert and published on 20 May 2010 ahead of the Cinema Against AIDS events at the Cannes Film Festival which were co-chaired by Gulnara Karimova.

In the article concerned, the author describes Islam Karimov as a “dictator” and claims Ms Karimova-Tillayeva and her elder sister Gulnara (Uzbekistan’s to the UN Offices at Geneva and Spain) are involved in whitewashing Uzbekistan’s image.
in the article, to which Ms Karimova-Tillayeva raises no objection, include the sentencing in 2009 of Uzbek anti-AIDS activist Maksim Popov to seven years in jail for promoting measures to prevent the spread of HIV; the assertion that Gulnara Karimova owns assets worth $1 billion; and estimates from the OSCE that up to 5,000 people were killed by government troops in Andijan on 13 May 2005.

A court in Paris will begin hearing this case on 19 May. “It will be interesting to discuss in court whether Islam Karimov is dictator or not,” Scalbert said.
