EU Granted £3.5 million to Glamorous Daughter of Uzbek Dictator Karimov

The European Commission has come under fire for awarding a £3.5 million grant to a charity controlled by Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva, the daughter of Uzbekistan’s strongman president.

The grant scheme is one of three development projects the commission approved for Uzbekistan last December. The funding, which could add up to more than £10 million, will come out of the EU’s general budget.
Mrs Karimova-Tillyaeva, 32, and her equally glamorous millionaire elder sister Gulnara, launched a stable of pseudo-charities following a crackdown on non-governmental organisations after the “colour revolutions” of the early 2000s. One of the charities, Fund Forum, invited the singer Sting to play in Tashkent in 2009.

Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva, Mr Karimov’s youngest daughter, has launched a libel suit against Rue89, a French news website which is focused on the claim that Ms Karimova-Tillyaeva paid Monica Bellucci, the Italian actress, £165,000 to attend a glitzy Paris function.
In a separate clause it also challenges the description of her as a dictator’s daughter” as defamation.
“In this article, Rue 89 painted a poor picture of Lola Karimova, accusing her of whitewashing her country’s reputation by paying celebrities to come to parties that she organised,” the suit read.
