Human Rights Watch Expelled from Uzbekistan

Posted by Info on 11/06/2011

The Uzbek Supreme Court held urgent hearings into the Justice Ministry’s suit on the liquidation of Human Right Watch’s office in Tashkent.

The judge heard arguments from a prosecutor, who asked for the satisfaction of the Justice Ministry’s suit, and the lawyer, who requested the court to consider the Justice Ministry’s arguments groundless. After that the judge passed a ruling to liquidate Human Rights Watch office within the next two months.

These hearings, like previous ones, were held in the absence of representatives of the defendant, although the judge claimed that they had been “properly notified”.

Tashkent-based human rights activists were angered that the hearings had been held ahead of schedule. They believe this was done to prevent observers from attending them.
