Russian Police Detain 24 Opposition Activists Chanting Against Putin

Riot police broke up the protest outside a subway station minutes after the activists formed a chain and started chanting slogans against Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. 24 people were detained.

The protesters also tried to unfurl banners criticizing upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.

Putin is expected to reclaim the presidency, raising the possibility he could prolong his increasingly authoritarian rule through 2024.

Russian Rock Stars Won’t Play for Putin

“We have already been told who would be our next president. There is a feeling that we are being deprived of the remnants of our right to choose.”

Andrei Makarevich, the frontman of the long-popular band Mashina Vremeni said he had been “incorrigibly naïve” to invest his hopes in Mr. Medvedev. Mr. Medvedev announced on Sept. 24 that he would not seek a second term, clearing the way for Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin to return for two six-year terms. The decision disappointed many liberal urbanites, who had hoped that Mr. Medvedev would remain and press for political reforms.

The leaders’ statement that the decision had been reached years ago “almost killed me.
